Godzilla vs. Kong, also known as "Apex" is a 2021 American science fiction monster movie made by Legendary Pictures. It is the fourth film in the MonsterVerse, following Godzilla: King of the Monsters, which is a sequel to both King of the Monsters and Kong: Skull Island.

After being postponed from May 29, 2020 to March 13, 2020, November 20, 2020, and finally May 21, 2021, Godzilla vs. Kong has finally been released. American audiences will see it on March 31, 2021. Up to April 30, 2021, the film was also available on HBO Max.

With the destiny of the planet at stake, "Godzilla vs. Kong" pits two of the world's most famous monsters against one other. They set off on a risky adventure with Jia, the orphaned child they've established an unusual and intense relationship over the years. In the midst of Godzilla's rampage, however, they find themselves in the line of the monster's wrath. Despite the titanic battle sparked by unknown forces, the enigma surrounding Earth's core has only just begun to be unraveled!

In the midst of downloading the data, though, Godzilla comes and hits him without warning. In the detritus of the building, there is a strange piece of machinery that looks like a robotic eye.

Nathan travels to Skull Island and meets his colleague, Monarch anthropological linguist and Jia's adoptive mother Ilene Andrews, with the idea of using Kong as their navigator to lead them to the energy source because Skull Island can no longer contain him and allow him to survive (because Kong has grown too large). Though Ilene first refuses, explaining that Godzilla would come for Kong as soon as he was transferred off Skull Island, she eventually agrees when Nathan convinces her that they must undertake this mission in order to end Godzilla's rampage and to find Kong a new home.

By now, Godzilla has arrived and attacked the soldiers, before causing the barge to capsize and almost drowning Kong as well as the others on board. When Nathan frees Kong by unlocking his shackles, enabling him to combat Godzilla underwater long enough for him to surface and tip the barge back on its head, he saves the party from drowning. Godzilla goes onboard a neighboring aircraft ship to fight Kong, who has jumped onto it. Fighter planes divert Godzilla long enough for Kong to drive him back into the water, where the two Titans trade blows until the latter is forced to retreat. This time around, Godzilla doesn't let Kong get away by firing his atomic breath from the copyright, but instead takes him down into the water and intends on drowning him.

Their struggle is interrupted up, however, when Godzilla is thrown off by depth charges, allowing Kong to surface for air.

During this time, Madison and Josh come into Bernie, who recognizes Madison as Mark's daughter and decides to assist them with their inquiry since they suspect Apex was involved in Godzilla's shift in behavior. With Bernie's help, they infiltrate the devastated Apex facility, only to discover that the "eye" Bernie had mentioned before is no longer there. As they investigate a mysterious facility deep down, the gang is mistakenly imprisoned inside and carried via an underground conduit to Hong Kong in an antigravity transport vehicle transporting Skullcrawler eggs.

There, the three disembark and find themselves in a huge dark room. They see Apex's most powerful weapon, "Mechagodzilla" which is a mechanized version of Godzilla controlled by the late Dr. Ishiro Serizawa's son and Walter's chief technology officer, Ren Serizawa, who is also his father. Mechagodzilla is put to the test as soon as the mecha is turned on. Walter unleashes a large adult Skullcrawler, codenamed "Number 10" into the room. Skullcrawler is about to attack Madison, Josh, and Bernie when it is grabbed by Mechagodzilla. Mechagodzilla uses a powerful red energy beam to cut the creature in half, allowing Madison, Josh, and Bernie to hide in a small hole in the ground. There are limits to how much power the mecha can use, so the test is cut short when the mecha shuts down right away because of them.

Following that, Kong and Nathan's squad continue their trek, finally arriving to a massive stone temple that was previously home to Kong's forefathers. They discover remnants of an old fight between Kong's and Godzilla's races as they investigate within, while Kong discovers an ancient axe fashioned from a dead member of Godzilla's race's dorsal plate before sitting on a massive throne. As Nathan's crew discovers the power source necessary to supplement Mechagodzilla's power supply, Kong discovers that the same power source can also be used to replenish the axe. Despite Ilene's protests that Apex cannot just grab the millennium's greatest discovery, Maia and the Apex crew collect the power source and return it to their Hong Kong headquarters using spider-like drones. Maia directs her guards to shoot at Nathan's squad, prompting Kong to aggressively yell at them in defense. Meanwhile, Mechagodzilla starts transmitting a signal to Godzilla, who detects the machine's activation and immediately rushes for Hong Kong.

There, Godzilla finds his way into the heart of the city and, detecting Kong's presence in the Hollow Earth, uses his atomic breath to bore a tunnel through the environment, collapsing the temple. Kong and Nathan's team fight off a flock of Hellhawks while Maia and her team attempt to flee in their HEAV, but Kong grabs it on their way out and, despite Maia's attempts to shoot him in order to escape, instantly crushes the aircraft in his hand after peering inside to ensure Jia, Ilene, and Nathan are not inside, killing Maia and her personnel.

Hearing Godzilla's scream as he challenges him with a new challenge, Kong accepts and, with his axe in hand, makes his way to Hong Kong through the hole produced by Godzilla's atomic breath, while Ilene, Nathan, and Jia follow in their HEAV. Kong confronts Godzilla again when he arrives in Hong Kong, this time obtaining the upper hand over the Titan to the point that he shoves his axe down Godzilla's throat to prevent him from launching his atomic breath. Kong discovers that his axe can not only deflect but also absorb Godzilla's atomic breath and uses it to harm the Titan in the thigh, however Godzilla takes the axe and tosses it away. After dodging and evading Godzilla's strikes utilizing Hong Kong's structures and superior agility, Kong recovers his axe before bringing his now-charged weapon down on Godzilla, causing an explosion that knocks both Titans back, leading Nathan to assume Kong had won the second round.

When the energy source and Ghidorah's brain networks affect Mechagodzilla, the robot goes berserk, murdering Walter with a sweep of its hand and electrocuting Ren when Walter's back is turned while he talks about his invention. Ghidorah's mind has now taken control of Mechagodzilla, which escapes from the Apex facility under Victoria Peak Mountain and attacks the city before Godzilla can stop it. Prior to engaging Godzilla, Mechagodzilla launches a salvo of missiles at its biological counterpart to close the gap.

Jia attempts to persuade Kong that Godzilla isn't truly his adversary when he wakes up and watches the struggle between the two monsters. Jia confesses to Kong that Mechagodzilla, not Godzilla, is the "real" adversary, despite Kong's initial skepticism about her claims. While repairing his dislocated arm, Kong eventually accepts Godzilla's offer to aid and sets aside his feelings of resentment.

Seeing Kong clutching his axe, Godzilla supercharges it by blasting the weapon with his atomic breath, enabling Kong to dismember Mechagodzilla limb from limb and tearing its head off before holding up his prize with a tremendous cry of victory and sitting down to rest.

In the aftermath, Nathan, Ilene and Jia sit together among the debris while Madison reunites with Mark and introduces him to Josh and Bernie, who is delighted to see Mark and invites him onto his podcast to talk about the Monarch facility in Roswell. Godzilla appears and interrupts their moment. The Titan grabs his axe and gets ready to fight again. However, Godzilla doesn't attack and merely stares Kong down. Understanding that their true enemy has been defeated, Kong lowers his axe, putting an end to the feud between his kind and Godzilla's. Now that they are no longer rivals, Godzilla and Kong regard each other as equals before Godzilla returns to the sea peacefully as Kong and all the gathered humans watch.

Monarch will have built an observation station in the Hollow Earth at some point in the future, if not already. In the morning, Kong goes by Ilene, Nathan, and Jia. To declare his new home and kingdom, the King of the Hollow Earth, Kong leaps onto an overhanging rock and pounds his chest, roaring as he proclaims himself the new king.
